Windows Server 2019 RDS Errors After Domain Controller Change

$

We had an existing Windows Server 2019 with Remote Desktop Services connected to a Windows Small Business Server 2011 that was acting as a domain controller.  Everything worked fine.

The SBS 2011 was recently replaced by a new Windows Server 2019 domain controller.  The new domain controller has the same name an IP address, so the old domain controller (SBS 2011) was removed, and the new one put in its place (Windows Server 2019)  We rebuilt the trust relationship between the existing RDS server and the new domain controller by running the PowerShell command on the new RDS server

Reset-ComputerMachinePassword -Server {server name} -Credential {domain\Administrator}

That worked fine for connecting the RDS to the new domain server.  However, when users try to login to the RDS Server using Remote Desktop, they get the error:

"The requested session access is denied".

The server manager on the RDS Server reports the following errors when a user tries to login to the RDS Server using Remote Desktop.

Error # 1280  Source: Microsoft Windows Terminal Services SessionBroker Client: :: Remote Desktop Services failed to join the Connection Broker on server SERVERNNAME.domain.local. Error: Current async message was dropped by async dispatcher, because there is a new message which will override the current one.
Error # 2056 Microsoft Windows Terminal Services Session Broker :::
The Remote Desktop Connection Broker server could not enumerate the targets for the provider named NULL from the database.
Pooled virtual desktop collection name: NULL Error: Logon to the database failed.
Error #226  Microsoft Windows TerminalServices ClientActiveXCore ::: RDPClient_SSL: An error was encountered when transitioning from TsSslStateDisconnected to TsSslStateDisconnected in response to TsSslEventInvalidState (error code 0x8000FFFF).

I researched these error codes but did not get too far.  Any help would be appreciated.

Multiple RDS sessions just for management?!

Hello.

I heard that phrase before "There is no stupid questions, only stupid answers". I am going to challenge it.

Here is a stupid question that I came up with and I do not remember seeing it asked or answered!

Our techops need to have simultaneous access to administer certain application servers. Until now, they used direct RD connections that limited them to 2 simultaneous sessions. I have deployed server 2016 RDS infrastructure, installed RD Session host roles on those applications servers, that they managed, placed them in one collection, installed User CALs and voila. The techops add RDS gateway in the RD properties and happily connect to the servers.

Have I achieved the requested goal?

What did I just give them - an environment which they can now use as remote users (aka VDI) or the way to have more than 2 simultaneous connections or the combination of the 2 ?  Which option for a session type would be better: pooled desktop session or personal desktop session?

Thank you.

Point a 2008 TS to itself for licensing

Hi

I have a 2008 R2 TS that I need to stay around for a few more weeks. Trouble is that is was pointing to a 2008 TS license server that was decommissioned recently. I have the license agreement info and I would like to point this TS server to itself for CALs.

No users are getting denied right now, but I want to be sure that won't happen.

I'm not sure why remote desktop services role services fails to install.  Failed message says. "Unable to install role services.  ArugmentNotValid. The role, role service or feature name is not valid.  'rds-connection-broker'  The name was not found."

Remaining installs for remote desktop services were cancelled.  Retried a number of fixes...all failed.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Getting the error message as above. Terminal server session and licensing server is 2019.

Forest level  and domain level of domain is server 2008 R2

Already tried the link below.

RDS Host third party app listening port redirection

$

This is the scenario:

I have a 3rd party application that brings up a listening TCP port for communications purposes.

This applications has a preconfigured listening port, lets say 49000, but the fact is the port is not available.

Testing this issue with iperf has brougth some info to light: Windows somehow redirects the listening port to a random TCP port, starting at 20000 and assigning it "randomly". Here are some pictures:

iperf acting as server (netstat shows the port 42500 is not listening):

Client failing to connect:

processexplorer to check the listening port:

Succesful connection with the redirected port:

Nestat with redirected port:

This behaviour seems reasonable, otherwise only the first user to turn on the applicacion would be able to actually use it but I haven't been able to find some information that explains how this process work and why does it do.

I can't find any information about it and I would like to know if I am right or there is another cause for this beaviour as well as know if there is a workaround for this app to run.

Floating Language Bar

Hi,

Is it possible to add a language for all users who log in to Remote Desktop Server 2019? We are having a hard time making floating language bar visible on RDP Sessions. We have published a website under internet explorer which runs after users log in to RDP Server and we need users to be able to write in another language together with English.

Thanks.

How to control application access in Remote Desktop Services

$

Hi,

I have a question about how to control i.e. grant / deny access to applications installed on Remote Desktop Session Host Servers.

Is there any recommended method/best practices to be used for granting access to a particular application (installed on RDSH Servers) to a limited set of users?

Thanks,

How to create a remote virtual hard drive in my local computer of documents on a VPS running Win server2016

I run an application in my local computers but I need the application  data file in a remote virtual server running Windows 2016.   I do not want to do remote desktop to run the application software in the server. I just want to host the application data file.

How I set this up?  I do not want to create a local copy of the server file because then clients be created segregates versions and this will not do me any good.

Hope my scenario has been laid down in a clear matter.

Hello,

We have two old virtualmachine 2008 r2, running remote desktop app services, and we got some issues with  schtask.exe process that comes randomly and uses all of cpu ressources that freeze the server.

We have to force restart the vm to get the services running again.

My question :

is it possible to disable remote access to schtasks.exe or just disable it forever? Because we 're suspecting a virus trying to remotly access to the task scheduler on both machines.

Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english

Update KB4534309 broke RDS over Web Application Proxy on 2012 R2 for iOS/Android clients

We have Remote Desktop published through Web Application Proxy, both running on Server 2012 R2.

The RDS application in WAP is configured for pass-through authentication so users can connect from both Windows and non-Windows ("rich apps" on Android/iOS/Mac) devices. This has been working for the past few years without issue.

After installing recent update KB4534309 (or the rollup that contains it, KB4534297), the non-Windows clients are unable to connect. They show error 0x3000008 during the "initiating remote connection" phase:

We couldn't connect to the gateway because of an error. If this keeps happening, ask your admin or tech support for help.

Has anyone experienced this or figured out a way to fix it?

Hi all,

My destination server is connected with a secure usb token where a particular software will access the certificate in the usb token. When i login to my destination server via local console, the software installed within my destination server is able to access the secure usb token. However when i access the same destination server via RDP, the same software installed within my destination server is unable to access the secure usb token. Why is this so? Pls advise. TIA!

RDS CAL licensing for middleware system written as a dispatcher to RDS

$

Hi,

I am software developer and I'm working on web-based distributed system written from scratch in C++, which can work with RDS. In a nutshell, it is a wrapper or rather dispatcher giving accelerated access to virtual desktops.
My system is a middleware and stands between system users and RDS.
In fact, users DOES NOT have direct access to sessions in Remote Desktop, but only through the pool of available "channels" made by my middleware system.

Users are not using any standard Remote Desktop Connection applications nor these HTTP5 based Web Client, but just have access only through my own protocol.
Users might be authenticated by other than AD or AAD systems.

For example, my system provides access for 1000 users, but I know that at the same time, only max. 10 users will need to work simultaneously on the system.

So, is that enough for my middleware system to have 10 RDS CAL devices only, or despite everything, do I still need to purchase 1000 RDS CAL users?

Best regards,
Robert

RDS device CAL for many users but working simultaneously

$

Hi,

According to licensing policy of RDS device CAL, this license is granting permission for any users working from one device having valid RDS device CAL.

I understand that purpose of this license is mostly dedicated for users working in shift work, but I am wondering if I could use this license for users working simultaneously, at the same time, from this one device.

Above scenario obviously could be possible to solve by additional software application, but this is why I am asking if this is legal and not violating RDS license terms.

Robert

Random disconnections from an RDS host and Remote Desktop Services Diagnostic Tool

$

Hi guys,

I have a Windows Server 2016 with RD Broker and RD Session Host roles. Users connect to this RD Session Host via another server with Remote Desktop Gateway role installed. In other words first users connect to a remote desktop gateway and then are redirected to a remote desktop session host (terminal server).

There are four users who work on that server and one of them sporadically gets disconnected from the server.

When it happens that user can see this message.

I checked local network connectivity as well as WAN link - all good and no dropouts.

I installed Remote Desktop Services Diagnostic Tool but struggling to interpret an output.

What user failed to logon means if that users indeed logged in but just gets disconnected sporadically?

Thanks and Regards,

RDweb used to work but now says The user name or password is incorrect...

Hello,

Serer 2012 R2 used to allow remote connections through RDweb via internet. I am still able to login to the server on the internal network via RDP. I have been through and checked all the deployment options and SSL certs within server manager. I can access the web page fine, but its not letting me login with this error

The user name or password is incorrect. Verify that CAPS LOCK is off, and then retype your user name and password. If you continue to experience problems, contact the person who manages your server.

I have tried both logging in using both credential formats domain\user user@domain.xx.xx.

I have been through the event logs and cant see anything related.

I have no gateway server.

I have checked the firewall rules so RDP is allowed.

Has anyone got any suggestions on how I can track down the issue?

Thanks

Connection Broker SQL setup.

Hi All,

So I understand that you cannot use SQL Express for HA connection broker back end because Express does not have any HA features native to the express version...but..

Can you use SQL Express as instead of WID as an RDS Connection Broker back endwithout any HA setup?

I'm trying to figure out how to create an RDS farm that is TLS 1.2 capable so that it meets our strict security auditing requirements so as I understand I need an SQL connection broker database to achieve this but I don't need HA, I just want to run a SQL Express database locally on my  RDSCB server capable of allowing TLS1.2 level encryption in the RDS farm.

Anyone know if this is possible?

Thanks in advance...

durrie.
